A biopsy is the removal of a small piece(s) of tissue from the cervix. It is performed in cases where the result of the Pap test is abnormal.
Usually no anaesthesia is required. It is taken with special biopsy forceps, always under colposcopic guidance by a specialist gynaecologist, so that tissue is taken from the points showing the most serious changes. In this way we ensure greater accuracy regarding the severity of the lesion.
It is then processed and examined under the microscope by a specialist pathologist.
The result of the biopsy is decisive for choosing the appropriate treatment.
