Laparoscopy is a modern method of surgical diagnosis and treatment. It is not performed with open surgery, but with the help of laparoscopic instruments.

These instruments are tube-shaped and of small diameter, so they can be inserted more easily through the abdominal wall, leaving the smallest possible scar. Laparoscopic surgery is indicated across the whole range of intra-abdominal problems, with few exceptions. In gynaecology it is used as a diagnostic tool in many situations such as:

• Unexplained infertility
• Testing the patency of the fallopian tubes
• Endometriosis
• Chronic pelvic pain
• Acute abdominal pain
• Polycystic ovaries
• Ectopic pregnancy
• Anatomical abnormalities of the uterus and adnexa
• Biopsies from various sites within the abdominal cavity
It is also used for therapeutic purposes in the following situations:
• Removal of benign ovarian cysts
• Salpingectomy and salpingotomy
• Removal of ectopic pregnancy
• Removal of endometriosis foci
• Adhesiolysis
• Untwisting of an adnexal torsion
• Removal of uterine fibroids
• Total hysterectomy
Laparoscopy has the advantage of a relatively quick operation, but the minimal postoperative recovery time is its greatest advantage, together with minimal formation of postoperative adhesions. The patient can leave hospital the next day and the scar on the abdomen is very small.
