Conisation is the method used to treat severe lesions (dysplasias) of the cervix.

It should be preceded by colposcopy and biopsies so that the lesion can be classified.

It is performed with a scalpel, electrodiathermy or laser, the last two methods being the more modern and with rarer complications.

  • It is performed by a specialist doctor
  • Requires local or light anaesthesia
  • No hospital stay is required.

After the procedure, abstinence from sexual intercourse for 10 days is recommended and local anti-inflammatory treatment is advised.

Bleeding and inflammation are the most common complications, while in a subsequent pregnancy a higher rate of preterm birth is observed compared with the general population.

The method is highly effective, and the patient should be followed up every 4-6 months with colposcopy and Pap test for 2 years.
