The intrauterine device (IUD, coil) is a small device, usually T-shaped, which contains copper or a progestogen (levonorgestrel). It is a long-acting form of contraception (3-5 years) and also a treatment for women suffering from functional uterine bleeding (menorrhagia, metrorrhagia).
The contraceptive effect is particularly effective, reaching 99%, while at the same time it is absolutely indicated for categories of women in whom the contraceptive pill is contraindicated, such as smokers, obese women, women with blood clotting disorders, etc.
Insertion is easy for women who have given birth vaginally. It is performed in the office, preferably during menstruation when the cervix has mild dilatation, lasts a few minutes and does not require anaesthesia. For women who have not given birth and for those who gave birth by caesarean section, due to the narrowness of the cervix, mild anaesthesia and cervical dilatation are often required before insertion.
