Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) is a method that makes it possible to diagnose a chromosomal abnormality or a genetic disease. It is carried out on cells isolated by biopsy from embryos produced by IVF. The biopsy is usually performed at the blastocyst stage (day 5 of embryo development).
Many couples can benefit from this method, such as:
1. Couples in whom one of the two partners has an abnormal karyotype.
2. Couples who are both carriers of genetic diseases such as cystic fibrosis and thalassaemia and are at high risk of having a child who will be affected.
3. Parents who have a child who needs a transplant and choose this method to bring into the world a child who will be histocompatible with their sick child.
3. Couples with unexplained multiple failed IVF attempts or unexplained recurrent miscarriages.
