Intrauterine insemination involves placing sperm directly into the uterine cavity. Maturation of the follicle(s) is achieved with clomiphene citrate (tablets taken by mouth) or gonadotropins (injected treatment).

During drug treatment the woman is monitored with ultrasound scans to assess the time at which the egg(s) are mature, in order to choose the appropriate day for the insemination. Before use, the sperm undergoes special processing and enrichment. Insemination is a simple, painless procedure that takes very little time and does not require anaesthesia.
