One of the most important developments of recent years in IVF is the possibility of cryopreserving genetic material. This method has made it possible for both men and women to preserve their fertility over time.

Fertility preservation is indicated especially for women, for medical as well as social or professional reasons.

Women whose fertility is threatened for medical reasons, and who are about to undergo either surgical removal of the ovaries or a treatment that may significantly affect their fertility (e.g. chemotherapy), can, through this programme, safely preserve their genetic material in order to use it once they overcome the difficulty.

Another medical reason is a family history of early menopause. These women face an increased likelihood of an early decline in their egg reserve and are therefore more often than the general population led to ovarian dysfunction and infertility. Cryopreservation of their eggs offers them the opportunity to have children with their own genetic material even when they reach the menopausal period.

Social and professional reasons are also very common. The modern lifestyle leads women to start a family at increasingly older ages, which makes conceiving more difficult. The possibility of timely egg cryopreservation frees women from this anxiety.

The process of this method includes stimulation of the ovaries with gonadotropins (injectable drugs) to produce multiple eggs. Before starting treatment, the necessary checks (medical history, ultrasound, blood tests) are carried out to determine the protocol and drug dosage. At the end of the treatment, egg retrieval (collection of the eggs) is performed under sedation and the eggs are cryopreserved by vitrification. The effectiveness of the method is directly related to both the quantity and the quality of the eggs collected. It is known that both of these important parameters decline with age.

The method is considered completely safe and controlled, as the likelihood of serious side effects from the drugs and of complications during egg retrieval is negligible.

Thanks to advances in assisted reproduction methods, and especially egg cryopreservation, women today can determine their own reproductive prospects without the pressure of age. Women who choose to manage their own fertility and store their eggs secure, over time, their right to motherhood.
