Weight Gain

Weight gain during pregnancy is a normal process. There are, however, certain rules that help pregnancy progress smoothly, with fewer problems. The acceptable weight gain is around two kilos each month, and a total of 11 to 13 kilos by the end of pregnancy.

Avoiding excessive weight gain is an important factor in preventing problems, mainly towards the end of pregnancy, such as pre-eclampsia, a serious condition for both mother and fetus. It is known that during pregnancy the need for food increases. This is a trap for weight gain, as foods with high caloric value and low nutritional value are usually consumed. It is therefore important to eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, together with proteins, i.e. meat and fish. It is also very important to have frequent, small meals. All of these should be discussed by the woman with her gynaecologist, and sometimes the help of a dietitian may be needed.
